On March 31, 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced additional relief efforts targeting small businesses by extending a 3-month automatic extension to file returns and pay taxes administered by the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA).

This extension is only applicable for businesses filing a return for less than $1 million in tax liability, which covers approximately 99.5% of all California business taxpayers. Qualified taxpayers are not required to file a request for extension or request relief from penalties or interest from the CDTFA.

Given that there are numerous business tax filings administered by the CDTFA with varying due dates, we recommend our clients visit the CDTFA website to verify the extended deadline as it relates to a particular tax filing (e.g., sales and use tax, cannabis excise tax, etc.).
